“Onboard's knowledge, ability and proven track record in creating successful user training programs on Dynamics ERP, made it a clear winner over the other companies we looked at.”

Nathan Herndon, IT Director

The ERP training and change consultancy Onboard has designed a Microsoft Dynamics ERP end user training program for Leggett & Platt Inc., one of North America’s largest diversified manufacturers.

The 134-year-old company pioneered sleep technology by introducing the spiral steel coil bedspring, and now has 130 manufacturing facilities in 19 countries around the world. It manufactures innovative products and components for the home, office, automotive and aerospace industries, generating annual sales of $3.8 billion.

Leggett & Platt’s implementation of Microsoft Dynamics ERP included corporate-level shared service systems for core finance operations, including general ledger, cash application, purchasing, accounts payable and accounts payable disbursements. The firm wanted their end-user training program to be developed alongside the system build to ease the transition from the legacy system they had been using for 25 years.

“Onboard’s knowledge, ability and proven track record in creating successful user training programs on Dynamics ERP, made it a clear winner over the other companies we looked at,” said Nathan Herndon, IT Director at Leggett & Platt.

The timeline for the project was very challenging, with the first end user training sessions scheduled to take place less than three months after the initial contact. Onboard had to be extremely flexible in its approach, and on two occasions the consultants made the journey to Missouri on short notice.

Onboard’s first task was to conduct an analysis of Leggett & Platt’s training needs. Three weeks later consultants travelled to Leggett & Platt’s headquarters in Missouri to conduct detailed knowledge transfer sessions and to immerse themselves in the company’s specific system build, work streams and business processes.

“Onboard drove these sessions and really helped us to better understand what was needed for effective user training, pointing out the potential pitfalls and giving us quality guidance,” Herndon reflected.

Following the knowledge transfer process, Onboard drew up a detailed plan identifying which of the Leggett & Platt employee-partners needed training on which aspects of the system, when and how, and outlining the supporting materials to be produced.

Onboard then designed and created the corresponding user-focused, role-based courses and lesson plans, as well as a full suite of documentation including quick cards for light-touch users and detailed reference guides for more complex processes. Due to the challenging timeline, Onboard designed and developed the training courses and materials while the system build was still being finalised. “Onboard’s knowledge of Dynamics ERP and their flexibility really stood out,” Herndon acknowledged. “If one work stream wasn’t quite ready, they just moved onto the next area and came back to it later.”

All materials created by Onboard were delivered in editable formats, thus providing a valuable resource, with a life extending well beyond go-live. After a few initial training sessions, Leggett was able to make alterations to the materials to suit their ongoing needs, as well as creating supplementary materials to help ease the transition between their existing legacy system and Dynamics ERP.

Leggett & Platt wanted to use their own internal trainers to deliver the end user training across the company. To facilitate this, Onboard provided onsite skill-the-trainer sessions to ensure the Leggett & Platt team had all the resources, knowledge and soft skills they needed to provide consistent and effective training.

“I felt comfortable with Onboard because they had done it successfully for other major North American companies,” reflected Herndon. “Their references were phenomenal and it proved to be a very cost effective and efficient way of working.”
