The City of Medicine Hat in Alberta selected Onboard as their training partner to support their implementation of Unit4 ERP. After conducting a market review, they city decided to engage Onboard due to their extensive previous experience with Unit4 ERP and their track record of providing quality support to ERP implementation projects across North America.

City of Medicine Hat implemented Unit4 ERP to replace Oracle JD Edwards ERP and a variety of other legacy and manual systems. The goal of the project was to provide a single integrated solution to meet all their needs.

Previously, a small group of core users had been responsible for completing a lot of internal processes. By moving to a more streamlined solution, the city hoped to encourage the wider community of end users to take on some of these processes themselves in order to maximise efficiency.

Onboard created a blended learning program and produced training materials for more than 1,300 end users. The training program covered two generic modules to introduce all users to the look and feel and basic functionality of the Unit4 desktop and web applications, as well as tailored, role-specific modules for users across a variety of workstreams, including Finance, HR, Payroll, Project Costing and Billing, Procurement and Field Management.

The training materials provided included a suite of detailed reference guides for each workstream and quick cards outlining simple, frequently used processes. The variety of deliverables enabled end users to learn in the way that best suited them and provided continued support after go live.

Onboard consultants delivered Skill the Trainer sessions to City of Medicine Hat’s process owners and enterprise system department liaisons to prepare them to deliver training to end users. As the City of Medicine Hat required a flexible training approach, Onboard designed trainer packs that would allow process owners to carry out informal training sessions outside a classroom. This collaborative approach helped the City of Medicine Hat to develop their internal training capabilities, making them less reliant on external partners in the long term and enabling them to train future new joiners themselves.

To provide a more cost effective solution, Onboard conducted all knowledge transfer sessions remotely, but travelled to Alberta, Canada to deliver the training face-to-face.
